To import photos, I picked up a cheapo card reader off Amazon. I've got four or five CF cards, so this makes it possible to get photos off them while still being able to use my camera (should I need).
I stick everything under a Photography folder with a yearmonthday naming convention, like: 2017316 - Paris. When I fill up an internal hard drive I usually just buy a new one that's bigger and move everything over.
In the CC version of Lightroom, after you move a files out of where Lightroom knows they are it gives you a ? over the folder they once were in. You can right/apple click and "Find Missing Folder".
If Lightroom 3 has this option (I'd be really surprised if they didn't), this is how you could move your pics off your desktop and still have them in Lightroom, if you wanted
As for backing up, I'm all for cloud based services. I personally use Google Photos, mainly because I have an Android phone and the integration is easy peazy. I use it less for backing up and more for being able to access any pic I might need from anywhere I might be.
